The autumn months are a beautiful time to get out and about in Calgary. We are lucky enough to have so many wonderful parks where we can disconnect from the city and immerse ourselves in nature as we enjoy the crisp fall air and take in the gorgeous fall colours as the leaves turn into beautiful shades of gold and red! If you’re looking for a fall hike, we’ve listed some parks close to the Beltline district, as well as some bonus out-of-town parks that are worth the drive!
Scotsman’s Hill
If you’re looking for a hike with a view, Scotsman’s Hill is the place to go! It’s a fantastic spot to enjoy Calgary’s iconic skyline and is also a distinctive feature of the Ramsay community, standing out as a rare hillside feature in the inner city. Many people visit the hill in the summer months as it’s a great spot to watch the rodeo and fireworks. However, it’s popular year-round with visitors who go to enjoy the stunning sunrises and sunsets that illuminate the sky.
Fish Creek Provincial Park
Fish Creek Provincial Park offers more than 100 kilometers of trails and is an incredible location for biking, hiking and boating. Much of the park remains in a natural forested state and is popular with bird watchers as more than 200 bird species have been spotted in the park. The park is also home to a variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians to discover!
Larch Valley
If you want to make a day trip out of your fall hike, Larch Valley near Lake Louise is well worth the trip! This 8.9 km trail is challenging and a popular destination for runners and hikers alike. Wind your way through the expanse of stunning forests and catch views of the beautiful Lake Moraine through the trees. The Alberta autumn is a particularly beautiful time of year when you can appreciate the golden larch trees!
North Glenmore Park
North Glenmore Park is a 208-acre park that offers hiking trails, playgrounds, firepits, BBQs and picnic areas. Located on the North side of Glenmore Reservoir, the park is also a great place for canoeing and is home to the Calgary Canoe Club and the Calgary Rowing Club. In the late fall and winter months, the park offers an ice trail, skating rink, and cross-country skiing.
Central Memorial Park
Located in the heart of the Beltline, Central Memorial Park is Calgary’s oldest park. This scenic park is home to geometric walking paths, elaborate gardens, and is host to Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Cenotaph. Stroll through the park with your friends, on a date, or on your way to the Memorial Public Library, which is a National Heritage Site.
